Fallow Deer

Head & body length: 80-100cm

Weight: 40-90kg

Adult usually reddish-brown with whitish spots in summer, usually grey-brown with pale, indistinct spots in winter. Occasionally all white. Rump whitish with dark rim, tail blackish with white margin. Antlers palmate.

Habitat: Characteristic of mature woodland, prefers deciduous or mixed woodland with established understory, will colonise conifer plantations.

Diurnal if undisturbed, otherwise nocturnal or crepuscular, lying up in cover during daytime.
